This week we've caught up with Tasha the talented designer and founder of Spindrift Collections, an independent jewellery label that uses recycled, recyclable and sustainable materials. We love the sustainable philosophy behind the brand and the gorgeous jewellery. But above all we believe in people and Tasha is hands down one of the nicest, talented and giving person we've met this year. It was a pleasure to interview her and get to know her better. We hope you enjoy it too!
Can you please introduce your business and its philosophy.
My business Spindrift Collection is a boutique jewellery & lifestyle brand for the dreamers, adventurers & barefoot wanderers. Using authentic, hand collected, sea smoothed beach glass & recycled sterling silver. My collections are inspired by the ever changing beauty of our oceans, wild natural landscapes and by a sense of wanderlust for places not yet explored
Working responsibly is at the core of everything I do, from using recycled materials, to giving back through our membership with 1% for the Planet. It is my vision to empower our customers embrace an active and conscious lifestyle, whilst building a personal connection to the natural world, using our W.I.L.D.S lifestyle philosophy.
How did you become a jewellery designer?
I have always been an entrepreneurial, creative soul, painting, creating, thinking & experimenting with interesting materials! I started my first company at the ripe old age of about 14! Spindrift is the result of my background in metal sculpture, my love of the ocean and my travels around the world.
Tell us about your biggest achievement to date?
My biggest achievements to date within Spindrift have been launching the Spindrift WILDS lifestyle philosophy. Alongside never giving up on my vision to work responsibly in business. Its not always the easy path, but it is by far the most rewarding and that which I am most proud.
What was the biggest set back launching your business and how did you overcome it?
Goodness I think I have made every mistake there is to be made in business. What I have realised in small business is often its two steps forward, then one step back, there are always set backs and difficulties to overcome but its all about learning to re-frame difficulties and set backs as opportunities or learnings and not taking things personally.
How do you support the female entrepreneur community?
I love to support fellow women in business and love to collaborate and share knowledge. One of my favourite quotes is 'We rise by lifting others' which i saw on a sign created by Peppermint Magazine at the Wanderlust Festival and I feel so connected to that way of doing business. For me, its all about helping each other succeed, building connections and friendships, rather than it being about trying to beat each other.

If you could change one thing about how we protect the oceans, what would it be?
The one thing i would love to change, is to to put a stop to single use plastic. As consumers we have so much say about the world we want to live in, its all about making these choices everyday. Simple choices such as refusing a plastic straw, taking your own carry bags to the shops or being mindful of your purchases make such a difference.
Who do you admire / respect most?
Wow thats a huge question, I have admiration and respect for so many people in business and in life! In business I have most respect for people working responsibly in business with strong values that they uphold to, such as Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia. If you have not read his book Let my people go surfing" I totally recommend it. I also have so much respect for Emma Watson, her fierce determination to drive change is so inspiring!
What might we be surprised to know about you?
I used to be a windsurf instructor teaching windsurfing in the Ionian Islands in Greece.
As an environmentally conscious business, what sorts of trends do you see?
The most exciting thing i am noticing if the collective shift towards a more sustainable lifestye and people placing huge value on purchasing mindfully. In the last couple of years, there has been much more mainstream focus on the issues that we are facing and I am excited to see people start to make that shift.
What do you do when you're not working?
When i'm not working you will find me, enjoying precious moments with my beautiful baby son Finn and my love Max . I also love to be outside in the wilds, hiking, paddle boarding, swimming, windsurfing and enjoying weekend road trips & overseas adventures.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow your footsteps?
In the words of one of our Spindrift brand ambassadors Sarah Hauser "Don’t follow footsteps! Be yourself, make your own path, believe in what you love, be bold and be brave!' I have to agree. With social media these days its so easy to fall into the trap of comparison and wanting to follow in someones footsteps, but in fact you should be yourself and follow your own unique path.
